Trash Sours with Chelsea Bourns

A Fresh, Cheap Take on a Classic

By Andrew McCrea | March 13th, 2020 at 9:09pm

Louis and I threw a #CocktailParty2019 to celebrate our new blender and my sister, Jessica, visiting from Calgary. Her good friends Danielle and Chelsea were also there.

Chelsea and I found ourselves in the kitchen creating a perfectly trashy version of a signature cocktail: the Whiskey Sour with hints of a New York Sour.

Think of it as a reverse Ina Garten recipe: store bought really is fine. The whole point of this drink is to revel in being upscale with undertones of being trashy and cheap. New money in Hollywood, if you will.

I mean, we did go for freshly squeezed lemon juice. You could go for the metallic-tasting bottled stuff but even we have standards.

We hope you enjoy a Trash Sour as we head into patio season. Here's how you make it:

Trash Sour Recipe

This makes 2-4 serving depending on your glass size and how full they are with ice.

Ingredients
3 oz. cheap rye (mid-range Forty Creek is fine)
2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice (bottled stuff for extra effect)
1 oz cheap vodka
1 oz simple syrup (1 part water to 1 part sugar, boiled and cooled)
2 extra large egg whites
Splash of cheap, boxed red wine

Directions
1. Fill a shaker half way with ice
2. Add the rye, lemon juice, vodka, and simple syrup
3. Shake vigoursly, at least 20 seconds
4. Add egg whites and shake another ten seconds
5. Fill up to four glasses with ice and pour in the cocktail
6. Top with a splash of the red wine
